Sweden confirmed its current ranking as the best European nation in the U20 category and won the Four Nations Tournament in the Moscow suburb of Novogorsk.

The tournaments during the International Break in November were the last big test for U20 national teams before the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmö.

World Junior host Sweden started with three unanswered goals after seven minutes of play from Oskar Sundqvist (2) and Filip Sandberg against the Czech Republic and eventually won the game 3-1.

The tournament was already decided on Day 2 as the “Juniorkronorna” defeated Russia 4-2. Again the Sweden started with multiple unanswered goals. Anton Karlsson, Robert Hägg, Andreas Johnson and Alexander Wennberg made it a 4-0 lead after 41 minutes of play. In the last game that had no meaning for the tournament win, Sweden lost to Finland 3-2 in a shootout.

Host Russia did better in the other games. Thanks to three power-play goals they defeated Finland 3-2 in the opening game and faced little challenge in a 6-1 victory against the Czech Republic to claim second place. Bogdan Yakimov and Vyacheslav Osnovin had two goals each throughout the tournament.

Finland finished the event in third place thanks to a 4-3 shootout victory against winless Czech Republic.

The other four European nations that will compete in the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmö played at the International Chablais Hockey Trophy in Monthey, Switzerland.

The first two days were dominated by Switzerland and Slovakia, who won their games against Norway and Germany with lopsided scores to set up a close final on Sunday.

Before 1,672 fans in the mountain village, Switzerland won an offensive-minded game with strong goaltending 3-2.

Marco Müller and Christoph Bertschy brought Switzerland the lead twice but Marko Dano tied it up with his two markers. The game-winning goal came just three minutes later at 15:52 of the second period from Kevin Fiala. The score of 3-2 remained until the end of the game despite increasing pressure from the Slovaks in the last period. Goalkeeper Melvin Nyffeler, who recently had his debut in the top men’s league NLA, helped his team with 43 saves.

Norway finished the event in third place thanks to a 5-0 victory against Germany. It was an important test for the recently promoted Norwegians since these two teams are seeded on bottom in the upcoming World Juniors, where the last-ranked team will be relegated.
