The suspension was issued to Pettersson for leaving the penalty box to engage in an altercation with a Russian player at the end of the Sweden-Russia semi-final.

Following a scrum between the two teams after the end of the third period, Pettersson #6 and Russian player Andrei Mironov #22 exchanged punches with each other before falling to the ice. Pettersson went under investigation due to the fact that he was not on the ice when the game finished. He was called for slashing with less than 30 seconds to go in the period, and left the penalty box at the conclusion of the game to get involved in the altercation.

The Disciplinary Panel determined that Pettersson instigated the altercation with Mironov by jumping him from behind. The Panel added that it was Pettersson’s responsibility at the conclusion of the game not to become involved with any opponent and that the altercation with Mironov was completely avoidable.

Based on these facts, the Panel has issued a one-game suspension to Pettersson, who will therefore miss the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game against Finland.
